Eriba. The Eriba Touring range of elevating roof caravans is made by Hymer of Germany and, over the past 50 years, has achieved cult status.

Construction uses a tubular steel frame and stove enamelled aluminium body. This makes for a self-supporting structure which is resistant to decay, aerodynamic and light in weight. These last two benefits make these caravans economical and easy to tow and this is further enhanced by the caravan’s low profile with the roof lowered.

The Eriba Feeling is more of a conventional caravan shape, but with a ‘pop top’ elevating roof giving a low profile whilst being towed. Built to Hymer’s legendary quality standards, it can be towed by a medium size car.

Freedom. These basic Polish-built mini caravans are ideal for those wanting to tow with a small car as their small size and GRP body shell make them very light.

Two and three berth models are available and you can choose from models with or without a washroom/toilet. A shower is an optional extra available only on models that have a washroom. A water heater is extra, too.

Some models have a 3-way fridge as standard and external water connections and a room heater come as standard only on the Jetstream 1st Class.

Freedom is a low cost option that should have a long lifespan. It will particularly appeal to tent campers moving up to their first caravan.

Geist. These caravans are built in Germany by LMC and are offered on a ‘direct from factory’ basis which minimises prices by cutting out the middle man.

The Aktiv range is available in five models for families of up to six people. There are layouts with side or full-width end washroom and with a variety of sleeping arrangements, including a 4-berth model with fixed double bed.

The 2.29m interior width of these caravans pitches them against mid-range models from the UK manufacturers and, for the price you pay, the spec. is good.

Although ‘tweaked’ to closer match UK tastes, the styling of these caravans is very Continental.

Geist Xklusiv. This range is more up-market and includes a twin axle model. They all have four berths.

The layouts are well thought out and there’s something for virtually every taste here.

There’s a model with large, full-width end washroom, plus wraparound seating that’s ideal for entertaining.

Two models - both with wraparound lounge seating - offer an island fixed double bed. There’s also a side-fixed double bed layout with more conventional side bench seating arrangement forming the lounge area.

The Xklusiv is well-built, attractive in a Continental sort of way, and excellent value-for-money.
